At Salvador Furniture, we pride ourselves on creating custom-built furniture that not only serves a practical purpose but also enhances the beauty and function of a space. In this edition of our project journal, we’re excited to share with you a curved entrance cabinet, designed and built for our clients Robin and Denise Baldwin, who reside on the picturesque foreshore of Caroline Bay.
Robin and Denise approached us with a unique request: to create a freestanding piece that would act as a divider between the entrance and the combined lounge room and kitchen area, all while showcasing the breathtaking water views as guests entered their home. To meet this challenge, our team worked closely with the clients to design a cabinet that would not only serve as a functional divider but also enhance the overall flow and aesthetics of the space.
We recommended American Ash as the ideal timber for this project. This moderately priced blonde wood is known for its unique, figured grain and stunning visual appeal. Finished in lacquer, the cabinet is designed to age gracefully, maintaining its fresh, bright tones for many years to come.
The final design features a modular cabinet with a subtle ninety-degree curve, creating a new doorway at the edge of the kitchen bench. Each module is equipped with adjustable shelving, while the last module incorporates staggered shelves for added versatility. This design allows for open-ended shelving options, perfect for displaying overhanging plants or other decorative elements.
One of the challenges we faced during the construction process was building the kick for the curved entrance cabinet. Drawing inspiration from the construction techniques used in crafting acoustic guitars, we utilized a single piece of wood for the front and back of the kick, creating the bend through a series of kerf cuts along the length of the radius. This innovative solution allowed us to achieve the desired curve while maintaining the structural integrity of the cabinet.
Robin and Denise’s curved entrance cabinet is a shining example of Salvador Furniture’s dedication to creating custom, handcrafted pieces that serve both practical and aesthetic purposes. Through close collaboration with our clients and innovative problem-solving, we were able to create a stunning and functional addition to their beautiful waterfront home.
